Collabora Online with recent SharePoint versions (Subscription Edition, 2019) – feedback?

Hello everyone,

We are currently evaluating Collabora Online in a Kubernetes/OpenShift environment and trying to understand the feasibility of integrating it with recent on-prem SharePoint versions, particularly SharePoint Subscription Edition (and potentially SharePoint 2019).

I’ve come across Collabora materials and demos showing integration with SharePoint 2016 via WOPI, including the use of WOPI bindings. However, I haven’t found clear or up-to-date information regarding:

  • Compatibility with newer SharePoint versions (Subscription Edition / 2019)

  • Whether the previous WOPI-based approach is still valid or supported (from my understanding Collabora is entirely WOPI-based and I don’t know how well latest Sharepoint’s Wopi implementations behave with Collabora)

  • Any known limitations, regressions, or required workarounds ? Eventually real-world production feedback (stability, supported features, etc.)

In other words, my questions are:

  1. Is there any official or semi-official support / demo/ etc for integrating Collabora Online with recent SharePoint on-prem versions?

  2. Has anyone in the community successfully implemented this with SharePoint Subscription Edition? And if so any feedback on pitfalls or recommended configurations?

Thanks a lot in advance for any help or feedback!
Fabio

Hii @fabiom

Welcome to the Collabora Online forum! And so sorry for the late reply — we were kind of busy with Cool Days, check it out:

Good news — Collabora does officially support SharePoint integration! Here are two key resources to get you started:

The integration is WOPI-based, so the core approach is the same as what you’ve seen in the older SharePoint 2016 demos — you point SharePoint’s WOPI bindings at your Collabora Online instance instead of Office Online Server. Since SharePoint 2019 and Subscription Edition both still support WOPI, the mechanism still applies.

For the Kubernetes/OpenShift deployment side, Collabora has solid Helm charts so that part should be straightforward. The SharePoint integration layer is where you’ll want to spend your testing time.

If you do get a POC running with SharePoint Subscription Edition, please share your experience here
