Android app unable to edit document

I know this has been mentioned here, but it remains unaddressed.

I have a .xls file on a cloud service (Mega), opened on an Android device using Play Store’s latest version of Collabora. The file has been checked to make sure its a local offline copy.

I can open it, but the edit button launches a choice of a) cancelling the edit, or b) make a copy and edit that.

This is a nightmare for version management and makes the whole app somewhat pointless.

When and how is this being addressed?

hii @mobile welcome to collabora online forums

Yeah, this is a known limitation. Currently, the app doesn’t request the necessary permissions to edit files directly from cloud services like Mega. The workaround, as you’ve mentioned, is to save a local copy and edit that.

Could you help me and file a GitHub issue here so the team can track and investigate it?

Including details like the app version, Android version, and cloud service used would be really helpful. Appreciate it

It’s difficult to provide a concrete timeline for this, as our resources are limited and we have many high-priority tasks. However, if there’s something urgent that you need to be addressed sooner, you can consider becoming a partner or obtaining a support contract to fast-track the development of specific features.

I can only impress that this is a significant issue for your Android user base:

  1. Its an obvious limitation to using Collabora. I (almost) may as well as use LibreOffice Viewer, or maybe another, commercial provider.
  2. Its a gap in the Android ‘app ecosystem’ - its impossible to have trustworthy opensource office file editing on Android (without complications of a proliferating number of document copies, its own not-insignificant management task).

If Collabora isn’t providing the solution we need - opensource, trustworthy office apps, integrated with ubiquitous cloud solutions (all brands) - then you just aren’t servicing the vast, growing number of Android users out there.

I appreciate your resource constraints. Unfortunately I have my own. Partnering and Subscriptions cannot be justified, especially when I might have to spend money on a commercial closed-source solution instead.

A fully functional Android app would surely help the fortunes of your project.
