Need workaround: CMD+number shortcuts conflict with Collabora Online

Hello everyone,

I’m a complete newcomer to this community, so I hope this is the right place to ask.

I would really like to use Nextcloud together with the Collabora Online integration as a long-term replacement for Google Drive. With every new release, I keep hoping that one particular issue has been solved. Unfortunately, so far without success.

I strongly prefer keyboard-driven workflows and avoid using the mouse whenever possible. For example, on macOS in Chromium-based browsers, I switch between tabs using shortcuts like CMD+1, CMD+2, CMD+3, etc. These are habits I’ve trained over many years and would prefer not to change.

However, these shortcuts regularly cause frustration in Collabora:

  • In Writer, CMD+1 formats text as Heading 1.

  • In Calc, the same shortcut opens formatting-related dialogs/panels.

As far as I can tell, there is no way to disable or remap these keyboard shortcuts, either in Collabora or via configuration.

So my question to the community is:

  • Is this a known issue?

  • Are there existing workarounds or solutions?

  • Is shortcut customization or disabling application shortcuts planned for future versions?

I’d appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Hi @petarmarj and welcome to Collabora Online forum

Thanks for the detailed report. Keyboard-driven workflows are very common among power users, so your feedback definitely makes sense.

What you are seeing is currently a known limitation in Collabora Online. Shortcuts like CMD/CTRL + number are captured by the editor itself (inherited from LibreOffice shortcuts), which conflicts with browser tab switching on macOS + Chromium browsers.

At the moment there is no built-in way to disable or remap those shortcuts. As temporary workarounds, you could try:

  • Ctrl+Tab / Ctrl+Shift+Tab for tab switching,
  • Firefox (behavior may differ slightly),
  • or browser extensions that remap shortcuts.

This would actually be a very nice enhancement for Collabora Online. If possible, could you please help by opening an issue in the GitHub issue tracker? That would help developers track and discuss the feature request.

Thanks again and welcome to the community :slightly_smiling_face:
